Tanzania's President Attends St. Petersburg Forum — While Tanzanian Citizens Are Being Recruited Into Russia's Army and Going Missing

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum is underway, with delegations from Central Asia, Africa, and the Middle East in attendance. Among the foreign leaders present is Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

While Russian authorities brief foreign guests on investment opportunities and cooperation prospects, StopRussianRecruiters.org - citing data published by the "I Want to Live" project - is publishing the list of Tanzanian nationals who signed contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense and were sent to the front line. At least two of those on the list are already listed as missing in action. Perhaps President Hassan will learn of their fate at the forum. Find the list below:

The recruitment of foreign nationals has become a significant component of Russia's effort to replenish its battlefield losses. Russia has used at least 28,000 foreign nationals from 135 countries in its war against Ukraine. The fate of foreign recruits follows a consistent pattern: some are killed, some sustain serious injuries, some are held as prisoners of war in Ukraine. What they all share is the same discovery - Russia's promises of easy money and fast earnings bore no resemblance to reality.

StopRussianRecruiters.org, citing data published by the "I Want to Live" project, publishes this list to make the scale of Tanzania's exposure visible — and to urge the Tanzanian government to take action to protect its citizens from recruitment networks operating on Russia's behalf.

Foreign nationals are warned: participation in combat on the side of the Russian Armed Forces carries a high risk of death or serious injury. If you are being recruited for combat against Ukraine, or have already found yourself in Russian military ranks - read our guide on how to safely surrender into captivity. If your relative went to Russia and suddenly stopped contacting you or went missing - reach out to your country's embassy and contact "I Want to Find" project for help - here is how to do that.
